This week, however, I have an actual seasoning mix recipe for you. Tacos (or some form of Tex-Mex type food) frequently appear on our menus and I don't like using the packets. I don't like the salt and I don't like the icky weird things that you find. So we make our own. I have a small glass container that I store this in so it's always on hand.
This recipe is a combo recipe. KerryAnn over at Cooking Traditional Foods publishes hers in her menu mailer and on her blog. It was part one of my inspiration. The other part of my inspiration came from my Pastor's wife's recipe. I took what I liked from each and made my own.
This recipe is an easy one to double or triple, or to make smaller. I usually use Tablespoons as my unit of measurement. You can use whatever you like, just keep the ratios the same. The other great thing about this recipe is that it uses spices that most of us have on hand.
4 parts chili powder
2 parts crushed red pepper
2 parts garlic powder
2 parts onion powder
2 parts cumin
1 part oregano
Mix well and store in an airtight container.
I use one to two teaspoons to replace a seasoning packet. You'll notice that there isn't any salt in the recipe, so you'll what to add some to whatever you are making.
This post is part of Traditional Tuesdays over at Cooking Traditional Foods.
